EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS & CONTRACTOR FRAUD WORKSHOP

Wednesday, May 16th, 2018           9:00 AM – Noon

Abita Springs Town Hall

22161 Level Street

Abita Springs, LA

The session will feature presentations on Emergency Preparedness by Clarence Powe of the St. Tammany Emergency Operations Center and Louisiana State Police Trooper Dustin Dwight. There will also be a presentation on Contractor Fraud presented by Assistant District Attorney Harold Bartholomew, Jr. from the 22nd Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

The doors will open at 9:00 AM for sign-in and a light breakfast snack followed by the presentations beginning at 9:30. There will be a mid-morning break and the event will end by Noon with door prize drawings.

The SALT Council is aware of the continuing need to stay current with the best practices to follow in case of an emergency, including decisions regarding evacuation.  The Council has spent many hours in discussion with Senior Adults to learn from their experiences and combine those with the necessities of the emergency managers; as a result, this presentation features many issues that are specific to Seniors.

The information on Contractor Fraud is timely for this event because disasters cause an influx of individuals who will seek to defraud disaster victims as they suffer the stress and despair that follows such incidents. The SALT Council wants to provide basic tools Seniors can use to protect themselves from unscrupulous individuals who will steal from them at any time, but especially when trying to cope with the difficulties caused by disasters.

There is no cost to attend the workshop, but pre-registration is required; pre-registration is available online at WWW.STSALT.ORG/EVENTS, by email to Events@STSALT.ORG or by leaving a message on the SALT Message Line at 985-809-5455. The pre-registration deadline is Noon on May 14th.

IT’S YOUR MONEY – KEEP IT!!

Friday, June 15, 2018      9:00 AM – 2:00 PM

Slidell City Auditorium

2056 Second Street

Slidell, LA  70458

Join the St. Tammany SALT Council for our annual workshop titled “IT’S YOUR MONEY – KEEP IT!!” for Senior Adults on Friday, June 15th in recognition of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.  The doors will open at 9:00 AM at the Slidell City Auditorium, 2056 Second Street and will include a breakfast snack, lunch, two different presentations and an exhibit area filled by vendors who support the Gulf Coast Elder Abuse Conference.  The event will end by 2:00 PM.

The event is a significant part of the Gulf Coast Elder Abuse Conference which will be held June 25-26 at the Northshore Harbor Center in Slidell. The conference began in 2007 to recognize World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, and the workshop for Seniors is a continuing commitment for Senior Adults to be aware of this important issue that directly impacts their safety and security.

This workshop concentrates on financial exploitation of Senior Adults, a crime that accounts for about 65% of all reported elder abuse cases, and costs billions of dollars annually. These losses are cash, savings, investments and resources that cannot be replaced easily, so the presentations are designed to address issues that may be of great value to the attendees.

The first presentation will begin at 9:30, featuring Ronda Gabb, an Elder Law specialist. Ms Gabb will discuss the issues surrounding legal protections for Seniors to prevent exploitation and how to identify legal resources to help create an effective personal legal plan.

After a long break for lunch and time to meet the vendors, John Skoglund III from Western Union will discuss financial exploitation by electronic means, how to identify schemes to defraud and how to protect against electronic exploitation.

The event is free, however pre-registration is required to be sure there is enough food, drinks, refreshments and vendor items. Pre-registration is available by emailing Events@stsalt.org, online at WWW.STSALT.ORG/EVENTS or by leaving a message at the SALT Message Center at 985-809-5455. The registration deadline is Noon on Wednesday June 13th.
